November and December L.E.S.S. (Loving Everybody by Simply Serving):
November and December are very busy months for Bethany in the areas of projects that care for our community. Therefore, this year L.E.S.S. will be joining two of our already existing programs that serve people in our community. In November, L.E.S.S. will be supporting the Thanksgiving Food Baskets with a donation from Lighthouse and help with the work necessary to put the bags of food together.
In December we will either partner with the Reverse Advent Calendars or with the preschool support of families in need. Both of those programs will be different this year, but we will be able to continue each of them.
Thanksgiving Food Baskets
We hope to be able to provide food baskets for Thanksgiving rather than just providing gift cards. We know the needs are significant this year and we will be working with Safeway to provide the best supplies possible. While we are working out the details, the need for donations and the purpose of the project remain the same. We partner with Pastor Pesa Tupa from the Tongan Assemblies of God Church in East Menlo Park. For years, they have been feeding people and distributing food for us at the holidays. Please mark your donations when you send them to Bethany so we can make sure your gift goes to this important ministry.
For many years, the youth group has sponsored a day of making gingerbread houses as a fundraiser for the triennial National Youth Gathering. The funds help send our youth on a once in a lifetime journey to celebrate their faith and learn more about Jesus with over 20,000 other young people from around the world! Usually most families gather in our Family Center to make the houses and to enjoy Santa, cookies, and a time of making this festive decoration. Some families pick up their houses and the items to decorate their houses so they can enjoy the experience at home.
This year, we will only be selling the gingerbread houses and all of the candy, frosting and other decorations for pick up on Saturday, December 5th. The price for houses will remain at $60. As in the past, for those people who wish to donate a house, we will happily find a family to receive your donation. Please look for flyers and email in the coming weeks with more information.
Backpacks for the Homeless
Teresita is working to purchase all of the items we typically put into backpacks for the people at Project We Hope. Our support of the homeless was covered on the local news last year and we know that the gifts of backpacks and basic essentials makes a difference in the lives of homeless people in our community. Once we have a final cost for the items, we will put out information about the cost of each backpack and you will be able to make a financial donation instead of going out to stores and purchasing all of the items. Thanks for adjusting with us as we rework how we will continue to serve in our community.
